The Heritage Revival Center organizes a seminar

Under the supervision of Professor Dr. Alaa Nafi Jassim, director of the center, the Scientific Arab Heritage Revival Center / University of Baghdad organized on Monday, November 27, 2023 with the presence of a number of professors and researchers in our center’s hall of Professor Nabeela Abdul-Moneim, a seminar titled “Arabic Proverbs, their types and characteristics”. Assistant Professor Dr. Eman Saleh Mahdi Al-Tadrisiya, a lecturer in our center, gave a speech. She said that proverbs are an art form in Arabic speech that are used to compare one situation to another. They have characteristics that qualify them to be one of the most eloquent art forms of Arabs: being powerful with few words, easy to circulate with many words, rare in meaning but rich, and clarity, elegance, comprehension and inclusiveness of all types of eloquence. Ibn Faris said (the letters Meem, Waw and Lam are a correct root that indicates comparing one thing to another thing. And this is like that, meaning its counterpart.) And the proverb and parable have the same meaning, and they may say mithil (similar). And the striking proverb is taken from this because it mentions what resembles it in meaning… As for in terminology, its meanings have varied with the variation of horizons of its speakers and diversity of their comprehension.Ibn Al-Sikkit said the proverb is a word that differs in wording from what it is struck for, but agrees in meaning with the meaning of that word. They resembled it to the parable on which others are based. And proverbs have types: the Quranic proverb which is the most eloquent and best preserved of proverbs because it is preserved by preserving the Noble Quran, and most circulated. The other type is the Arabic proverb which contains a lot of eloquence, but does not reach the level of the Quranic proverb and is undoubtedly more refined than the colloquial proverb, and many works have been authored about it. As for the third type of proverbs, it is the colloquial proverb which is widely circulated and encompasses all aspects of life and more accepted among common people; they circulate it from generation to generation, while proverbs vary in the extent of their use and spread – there are those that were written for permanence and continuity, and there are those that remained confined to book pages, barely heard of. In conclusion, the director of the center thanked the lecturer, wishing her continued success.

The study included a heritage, historical and contemporary political vision in two sections: The first section dealt with studying the city of Gaza in Islamic heritage. The second section studied modern Gaza and its role in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

The seminar opened with a recitation from the Holy Quran, then the Iraqi national anthem, and the recitation of Al-Fatiha for the souls of martyrs, followed by a speech by Dr. Alaa Nafae Jasim, director of the center. The first research was presented by Dr. Saadi Ibrahim Aldaraji, a lecturer at the Center for the Revival of Heritage, entitled “Examples of Tombs and Epigraphic Evidence in the Ancient Cemeteries of Baghdad: An Archaeological Study.” who speaks about how the cemeteries of Baghdad constitute a wealth in the fields of architecture and arts, containing remains related to tombs and graves distributed in its eastern and western sides, most notably: Al-Ghazali Cemetery, the cemetery adjacent to the Qadiriya Sufi Lodge, the Rose Cemetery (Sheikh Omar al-Suhrawardi), and the Reed Cemetery (Abu Hanifa)

A city called Baghdad existed in spirit before its actual construction. After being built, some areas maintained their status while others emerged. Specifically on its western side (Karkh) and eastern side (Rusafa), where we focused our research on the churches and monasteries of different Christian denominations within Baghdad, in addition to shedding light on their social, economic, and cultural role, albeit very limited and more focused on monasteries than churches. In addition to being places of worship, they simultaneously achieve goals that positively impact the surrounding social environment they harmoniously coexist with in peace and security. We also touched upon the reasons for the increase in Christians numbers in the western side (Karkh) compared to the eastern side (Rusafa). The research concluded with a speech by Dr. Lua Shaker Khattar, a lecturer at the Heritage Revival Center, titled “Baghdad’s Ancient Markets Between Heritage and Modernity.” She spoke about peoples’ pride in their legacy and urban landmarks, most notably the markets that played a major role in Baghdad’s history – the best testament to the development and progress of societies. These markets are important in shaping cultural and heritage landmarks and memories. She mentioned the most prominent markets: Souq Al-Sarai, Souq Al-Shorja, Souq Al-Safaafir, Souq Al-Ghazl, and Souq Al-Haraj.
