Seminar

Heritage Revival Center Organizes a Seminar “Building Materials Used in Ancient Iraq and Their Role in Preserving Temples and Palaces

Under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Laith Majid Hussein, Director of the Center for the Revival of Arab Scientific Heritage at the University of Baghdad, the  Center organized a seminar on Monday morning, May 26, 2025, in Professor Nabeela Abdul-Munim Dawood Hall, attended by a number of professors and researchers. The seminar was entitled: “Building Materials Used in Ancient Iraq and Their Role in Preserving Temples and Palaces” The lecture was presented  by Assistant instructor Milad Mohammed Yassin, a member in the Center, who spoke about the construction materials that played a major role in the building of temples and palaces in Mesopotamian civilization. He emphasized how the environment significantly influenced both the choice of building materials and the types of structures constructed. Clay was the primary material used due to its ease of production and its thermal insulation properties during summer. It was also used as a binding material in construction. The researcher elaborated on the methods of utilizing these materials, including molded mud bricks, which were strengthened by mixing straw and chaff with clay and drying them, resulting in high durability. Their structural method allowed walls to remain intact for extended periods. Fired bricks (ajur) were also highlighted, particularly in the construction of temple foundations due to their resistance to moisture, salt, and high compressive strength. Bitumen was used as a binding agent with fired bricks because of its waterproofing properties. High-quality wood was used as an essential material for roofing temples, while stones, such as limestone, were employed in temple and palace construction and in flooring. Limestone was especially valued for its strength and durability, which contributed to the preservation of these structures up to the present day.

seminar the need in Arabic literature books

The center of heritage revival organizes seminar  ( the need in Arabic literature books )

Under the supervision by prof. Dr. Alaa Nafea Jasim (the director of the center ) the center of heritage revival organizes seminar entitled ( the need in Arabic literature books) where sited on the gallery of Nabila A. Dawood in the center on  Tuesday 4th/2/2025 , the lecture is presented by the Head of Manuscripts Department prof. Dr. Zainab Kamel Kareem defining the need as one of the important literary subjects Which urges good manners, deters from baseness, and encourages sound management and good judgment. Developmental psychology goes to the fact that need and want are necessary for the continuity of life, and because of the multiple motives that drive it, needs are multiple and gradual. Since need is a matter closely related to man, the Holy Quran must mention it and address it in noble verses. From our study of these verses, we find that the Quran divides human needs into material, psychological, and moral needs, and psychologists have agreed with the Holy Quran in this. The lecturer added that there are many hadiths in which we find the Messenger (peace be upon him ) urging a Muslim to fulfill the need of his Muslim brother, and other hadiths that show the benefits and virtues of the verses and surahs in fulfilling needs. Then we find that many books have been written on this topic, which is the topic of the virtues of the Qur’an, such as the book “The Virtues of the Qur’an” by Abu Ubaid al-Qasim bin Salam al-Harawi, who died in 224 AH, who addressed many topics in fulfilling needs and achieving demands.

The center of heritage revival organizes workshop

Under the supervision by prof. Dr. Alaa Nafea Jasim , the center organizes workshop entitled ( the famous Arabs and their effect in Arabic Renaissance era , the lecture is presented by prof. Dr. nadia Gathban Mohammad (one of the lecturers in Iraqi scientific collective ) The researcher discussed the Renaissance from a linguistic, historical and philosophical perspective since its inception in Europe and the extension of its impact to Arab countries due to the European occupation. She then talked about the most important representations of this Renaissance in Iraq, its fields and the influential names that contributed to shaping the map of cultural, political, social and artistic awareness. She also showed that the Renaissance is a continuous state between the past and the present because it is linked to the way of thinking. This does not mean that critical thinking should not be practiced on it, but rather it is a necessity to review to measure its impact, especially in what was produced by newspapers and magazines that dealt with the daily life of Iraqi society and its situation with the establishment of the concept of the modern state. The researcher touched on the importance of institutions in supporting the intellectual renaissance in Iraq. Among the most prominent of these institutions is the Scientific Institute founded by Thabet Abdel Nour in the 1920s and the Iraqi Scientific Academy, which included great names, some of whom are involved between the Center for the Revival of Arab Scientific Heritage and the Academy, such as Dr. Taha Baqir, who founded an Iraqi archaeological school with its own features, and Professor Dr. Saleh Ahmed Al-Ali, who established a method for reading Arab history. She touched on the legal renaissance at the hands of the head of the Iraqi Scientific Academy, Professor Munir Al-Qadi, and his impact on the formulation of civil law in Iraq. As for the field of artistic renewal, we find Jawad Salim, who was able to draw inspiration from what is historical and local to bring it to the global scene. seminar (Andalusian lead plates)

The center of heritage revival organizes seminar (Andalusian lead plates) :

Under the supervision of prof. Dr. Alaa Nafea Jasim , the center of heritage revival organizes seminar entitled (Andalusian lead plates( on Monday 25th/11/2024 in the hall of Nabila A. Dawood in the center , the seminar is presented by prof. Dr. Wijdan Fareeq Enad (one of the center’s members) who talks about Andalusia through the period Following the surrender of the city of Granada, we find many historical issues that deserve to be stopped and studied, including the lead tablets, about which opinions differed, forming a mystery that is still mysterious and needs to be explained in several aspects. What attracts attention is that most studies on them try to prove that they are fake, and it seems that these researchers ignore that historical truth has more than one aspect, so why is the hypothesis of the truth of these tablets often met with dissatisfaction?! Therefore, we believe that researchers must be armed with other auxiliary sciences when studying these tablets in order to reach what is closest to the historical truth. Using mineralogy to know their mineral composition, and studying the type of writing, the nature of the language and the linguistic vocabulary used in their content, will reveal other angles from which the credibility of these tablets can be reconsidered. However, these tablets still have an undeniable historical value, as they are an integral part of a historical era that must receive more in-depth and serious studies
